Bus Transport

Whangarei Girls' High School is well served by a network of free Ministry of Education bus runs, and also private, fare-paying services.

New students will get some bus information on Orientation Day, but it is well worth ringing the bus contractor to check times and exact pick up points. A purpose built bus bay, shared with Whangarei Boys' High School, provides safe loading and unloading of bus students.

Free Bus Services

This service is provided by the Ministry of Education for students who generally live outside the Whangarei City area (more than 4.8 km from the School). The transport is free from WGHS out to the mid-way point of the next nearest secondary school. Beyond this point students may be responsible for their own transport or may need to pay a fee. Students inside the 4.8km are expected by the Ministry of Education to use city fare-paying services or find their own way to school.

Students living outside the WGHS ZONE but on a MOE bus route

Students who do not attend their nearest high school but choose to attend WGHS will be able to travel on available Ministry buses (where there is room on them). This is by mutual agreement amongst most of the local secondary schools. These students will have to pay a nominal set fare to travel to their nearest local high school and then travel the rest of the way to Whangarei Girls' High School on our pay "link" buses. So, for example, students North/East of Whangarei can travel on a Ministry bus as far as Kamo High School or Tikipunga High School, and then travel the rest of the way to Whangarei Girls' High School on our pay "link" buses.

Students from Ruakaka/Bream Bay have limited private bus travel options only and will need to contact Leabourne Passenger Services to organise this. The nearest free ministry bus pick up is the Maungakaramea turnoff on SH1.

Transport Subsidy

In zone students who live more than 2.4 km from their nearest Ministry bus route to school, may be eligible for a transport subsidy from the Ministry of Education. Information is available on the Ministry of Education website.

Please contact the contractor of the service you wish to use for precise details of running times and/or pick up points.
