WGHS Squash Team competes in the NZ Secondary School Teams Squash Tournament

Huge congratulations to the WGHS Squash Team who competed in the NZ Secondary School Teams Squash Tournament in Nelson from 8th - 10th August. The team, who consisted of Bridget Johnson (captain), MacKenzie Johnson, Olivia Brookland, Hayley Green, Gemma Turketo and Iyra Stewart finished a commendable third.

Early rounds against St Matthews Collegiate and Westlake Girls’ High School were won comfortably. Unfortunately, they then lost to a very focussed and well prepared Palmerston North Girls’ High School Team, although there were some tight contests in most of the matches. They then had to face the final battle for third and fourth place. The team had to fight hard to beat a strong and very determined Te Puke High School, which they won 3-2, placing them third in New Zealand!

At the prize giving, the team received their third bronze medal in three years!

At the conclusion of the prize giving the NZ Secondary Girls’ School Team was announced. The team will travel to Australia later this month to take on the best Australian Secondary Schools in the Trans-Tasman Series. MacKenzie Johnson was selected for the Senior (Year 11-13) Girls’ Team as non-travelling reserve, an amazing achievement for a Year 11 student. Thanks to Coach: Linda Matson and Manager: Audrey Green for hard work and support.
