Sport

Whangarei Girls' High School is proud of the extensive range of sports on offer to all students.  We endeavour to cater for all student needs whether they be elite athletes striving to reach their full potential, social participants or students wanting to improve their fitness.

Hockey

A continuously strong code at Whangarei Girls' High School, our students continue to excel in this sport.  2010 was no exception with Brooke Neal selected to attend the NZ Junior Hockey Academy while Rachael Lecky has received a National Leadership in Hockey Award.

We have had numerous girls play NZ Hockey through the age groups which include past pupils; Charlotte Harrison, Alana Millington and Jacinda McLeod who all played for the New Zealand Women's' Black Sticks.

In 2010 there were eight teams. Four play Women's Grade and four play Collegiate Grade. The 1st XI plays in the Northland Hockey Association Premier Grade. They attend the National Secondary School's championship and were the title holder in 2005.

Netball

In 2011 we have 19 teams playing the Whangarei Netball Association Saturday Competition.  Our top team plays in the Premier Grade and attends local, regional and the UNISS Netball Tournament annually.

Soccer

Whangarei Girls' High School has three soccer teams this year.  The 1st XI plays in the Northland wide Mid Week Boys grade Secondary School Competition.  The team was promoted to the Premier League for 2009 NSS's after winning the NSS Division Two Tournament last year.

Cricket

We have a strong 1st XI Cricket Team who took out the Leef Cup in a close final against Kamo High School in 2009.

Futsal

WGHS students Chelsey Webster, Nicola Anderson and Stacey Wright have all been selected for the NZ Vikings Futsal team.

Adventure Racing

Teacher In Charge - Olivia Ford

Students wanting to participate in this sport can do so at a social and competitive level. Adventure Racing is an endurance sport that compromises of Orienteering, Problem Solving, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Rock Climbing and everything in between. We go to a number of events throught the year, some local but mainly Auckland and Waikato based. Students race as individuals and in teams. Senior training starts at the beginning of the year and goes until May and Junior students start in June and go through till December. Overall we traing as a large squad and form smaller teams based on the event.
